In Brazil, the number of people who have died in one day from or with the corona virus has risen to a new high.
According to the Ministry of Health in Brazil, the death toll was 2,841. This brought the total number to more than 282,000, which in absolute terms is the second highest in the world after that in the United States. In terms of population, however, the death rate is higher in many countries than in Brazil.
Brazil’s far-right president Bolsonaro has always downplayed the danger posed by the virus. Yesterday, he appointed Queiroga, a cardiologist, as his fourth health minister since the pandemic began. Queiroga’s predecessor had been ousted after problems with the procurement and distribution of vaccines. The previous two department heads had left office because of disagreements with Bolsonaro over the right Corona policy.
